1.- Why dreampop?
I always enjoyed dreamy atmospheres. I particularly love the bands that
were the pioneers of dream pop and shoegaze, like Cocteau Twins, A.R.
Kane, This Mortal Coil, but I discovered them later in my life. I grew up
listening to bands that don’t fall under the specific dream pop genre, like
Dead Can Dance, The Cure, Sigur Ròs, that have a dreamy quality to
their music. I also love Angelo Badalamenti work with Julee Cruise and
David Lynch.
2.- How did you start your creative solo process?
In 2012 I started my solo project She Owl – that later turned into a duo with guitarist Demian Endian. While I was living in San Francisco (CA) in 2013 we recorded our first LP. Since then we’ve been playing hundreds of concerts, and I learned so much about composing and touring. I am a multi-instrumentalist, but my main instruments are piano and vocals.
While on stage with She Owl, I was looping drums and vocals live, creating dreamy ambient-like improvisations. From this experience, I realized that I could expand those ideas – between improvisation and composition – I could record and present them as songs. This is how I started my vocal ambient solo project. I also needed a solid perspective to frame my ideas: in the last few years, I felt the urge to reconnect with
my roots, my land, the place I come from (North-West of Italy). I came back to Italy, and I started collecting stories and photos of my family, especially of my women ancestors. I discovered so many incredible stories. Being also a collagist, I decided to start a project where each song was dedicated to one of the women of my family: one photo, one
collage, one song. I was the thread linking all of them. The title of the album is Nine Spells. Each song is a different Spell.

and more. I always felt a huge responsibility in creating music». We are vibration interacting with vibration, and with music we experience it directly. I decided to use only my voice as an instrument. It was a huge challenge to create something consistent and interesting with just a voice.
3.- Where do you frequently create (your) music? In which space (s)? And
how do you invest your (their) times in creation?
Songs and melodies usually crop up when I go for a walk alone, when I work in the garden or when I look at the clouds passing by. Those moments of contemplation are very important for creativity. They help creating a sacred space away from the everyday’s influences. That space is my source of inspiration. Usually, I start with some words or a little melody. I have hundreds of voice memos with drafts and ideas I can pick from to create new tracks.
In the last few years, I slowly built a home studio and studied music production to be independent, if necessary, when it comes to recording and mixing my albums. This step was so important for me and my music.
I can work on a track for hours without worrying too much about timing and I can experiment, try different versions and sounds. Then I leave the song for a few days and come back later to see if I still enjoy it.
Time goes by way too fast in a rented studio. It’s been a great experience in the past, I had to I learn how to deliver the best performance with just a couple of takes. This made me a better musician and performer, but now I enjoy taking all the time I need to finish a track. This project is very new. I started it in March 2020, so I hadn’t played concerts yet, but I would love to play one soon.

5.- What do you think is the ep or hit song of your band and why?
Being this an experimental project, I didn’t focus on writing hit songs or catchy refrains, although most of the LP can turn out to be a soundtrack of more than one film… I wrote each track as a part of something very harmonious. Even if each track has its special effects and features, I imagined Nine Spells as a whole.
6.- What references did you take to create your music?
For this particular project, the main inspirations are the women ancestors of my family, but also everything that concerns the North-Western Italian landscapes, the mountains, the winter snow, the summer fields, the autumn fog in the chestnut trees. Also, the folk tales that my grandparents used to tell me when I was a child. Everything about the atmosphere of this place merged into this record.
8.- What do you enjoy most of your music? I love every part of it. I love creating it, I love recording it, and producing it, I love sharing it with people, and the energy of a live show. I also met my best friends thanks to music.
9.- What do you think about the creation of the Dream pop platform? Do you think (s) that this space is necessary?
Yes, absolutely! It’s a positive thing to have independent and genuine voices sharing independent music. Thank you so much for the work you’re doing.

band to the readers
I would love to remind you that you can be creative in every little thing you do in your life, because there’s plenty of magic in all of us. Keep dreaming outside the box. Always remember where you come from, your fruits need your roots. These roots will keep you grounded even in the biggest life’s storms.

directamente. Decidí usar solo mi voz como instrumento, fue un enorme
reto de crear algo consistente e interesante con solo una voz.
3.- ¿Dónde creas (tu) música con frecuencia? ¿En qué espacio(s)? Y
¿Cómo inviertes tu (su) tiempo en la creación?
Las canciones y melodías suelen surgir cuando salgo a caminar sola, cuando
trabajo en el jardín o cuando miro las nubes pasar. Esos momentos de contemplación son muy importantes para la creatividad. Ellos ayudan creando un espacio sagrado lejos de las influencias cotidianas. ese espacio es mi fuente de inspiración. Por lo general, empiezo con algunas palabras o un poco de melodía. Tengo cientos de notas de voz con borradores e ideas que puedo elegir desde para crear nuevas pistas.
En los últimos años, construí lentamente un estudio en casa y estudié música. La producción es independiente, si es necesario, a la hora de grabar
y mezclando mis discos. Este paso fue muy importante para mí y para mi música.
Puedo trabajar en una pista durante horas sin preocuparme demasiado por el tiempo
y puedo experimentar, probar diferentes versiones y sonidos. Entonces dejo la
canción durante unos días y volver más tarde para ver si todavía la disfruto.
El tiempo pasa demasiado rápido en un estudio alquilado.
Ha sido una gran experiencia en el pasado, tuve que aprender a ofrecer el mejor rendimiento con solo un par de tomas. Esto me hizo un mejor músico e intérprete, pero ahora disfruto tomándome todo el tiempo que necesito para terminar una pista.
4.- ¿Ya tienes conciertos en vivo? ¿Cuáles son los más importantes?

Este proyecto es muy nuevo. Lo empecé en marzo de 2020, así que no había jugado
conciertos todavía, pero me encantaría tocar uno pronto.
5.- ¿Cuál crees que es el ep o tema de éxito de tu banda y por qué?
Siendo este un proyecto experimental, no me enfoqué en escribir canciones exitosas o
estribillos pegadizos, aunque la mayor parte del LP puede convertirse en una banda sonora de más de una película… Escribí cada pista como parte de algo muy
armonioso. Incluso si cada pista tiene sus características y efectos especiales, creo que
imaginó Nine Spells como un todo.
6.- ¿Qué referencias tomaste para crear tu música?
Para este proyecto en particular, las principales inspiraciones son las mujeres antepasadas de mi familia, sino también todo lo que concierne al noroeste de Italia
paisajes, las montañas, la nieve del invierno, los campos de verano, la niebla otoñal en los castaños. Además, los cuentos populares que mi me decían mis abuelos cuando era niña. Todo sobre la atmósfera de este lugar se fusionó con este registro.
8.- ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de tu música? Me encanta cada parte de ella. Me encanta crearla, me encanta grabarla y producirla,
Me encanta compartirlo con la gente, y la energía de un show en vivo. también conocí a mis mejores amigos gracias a la música.
9.- ¿Qué opinas sobre la creación del de Dream dreampop? ¿Piensas que es un espacio necesario?
¡Si, absolutamente! Es algo positivo tener voces independientes y genuinas compartiendo música independiente. Muchas gracias por el trabajo estás haciendo.
10.- Un mensaje que quieras (quieres) entregar o liberar palabras a los lectores
Jolanda: «Me encantaría recordarte que puedes ser creativo en cada pequeña cosa que
haz en tu vida, porque hay mucha magia en todos nosotros. Sigue soñando
